King William’s Town - Butterworth police are investigating following the rape of a 25-year-old woman, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

The victim was on her way to a clinic at Mcucuzo Village, Butterworth, on Friday, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“She then met a man but tried [to] run away. She was caught by the suspect.”

The man allegedly demanded her cellphone but she did not have one.

He then assaulted the woman on her upper body.

She was overpowered and eventually raped by the man.

The victim managed to disarm the man of his knife and threw it into a nearby forest.

After the rape, the man ran away.

He was yet to be arrested.

Butterworth police appealed to anyone who may have information about the identity of the suspect to contact them at 047-401-1100 or Crime Stop 08600-10111.

“Women are advised not to walk alone long distances as they become victims of crime,” Manatha said.
