DURBAN - The Botswana Police Service arrested two South African men on Tuesday morning for being in possession of firearms and ammunition.

The men were arrested at Block 3 location in Gabarone, Botswana assistant commissioner and public relations officer Dipheko Motube said.

Motube said the men were in possession of an AK 47 rifle, a pistol and several live rounds of ammunition.

“The duo, aged 40 and 47, were travelling in a motor vehicle reported stolen in the Republic of South Africa,” Motube said.

He said the Botswana Police Service appealed to the community to continue to promptly report any suspicious character to the police.

This was the third incident in five weeks where South Africans were arrested by Botswana police.

At the start of November, three South Africans were among five men arrested for a spate of heists that had taken place across Botswana. Motube said the five men had been involved in some of the heists.

“The suspects, two Batswana and three South Africans, aged between 27 and 34, were arrested yesterday (29/10/21) in Mosetse Village,” he said at the time.

“Four of the suspects are linked to the Mahalapye attempted robbery in which G4S vehicle was shot by armed robbers. Three loaded pistols and spikes were found in their possession.

“A South African registered motor vehicle with false Botswana registration numbers, in which they were travelling, has been impounded.”

In the middle of October, two South Africans are among four suspects were arrested for a robbery in Botswana. The other two were nationals of that country.

At the time, Motube said Botswana police officers and G4S security personnel had been attacked by robbers at Turn Right Mall in Mogoditshane and an undisclosed amount of money and firearms stolen.

“Following the incident, quick response from security forces led to the arrest of four suspects, being two Batswana and two South Africans, who are currently in police custody,” Motube said.

“Three vehicles that are suspected to have been used by robbers, two guns and large sums of money have been recovered.”

Motube said the public would be updated on further developments as police investigations continued.
