London - If you don’t like paying for things you can have for free, the new bar at Selfridges may not be for you.

The London department store is soon to open Britain’s first water-only cocktail venue.

To be opened in the store’s accessories hall, it hopes to import a fad from the US for so-called designer waters. Some top restaurants and water bars there offer H2O menus on which brands such as Fillico Jewelry Water can cost as much as £130 (about R2 700) by the bottle.

Selfridges will consult a “water sommelier” – who can supposedly tell what region a water comes from by the taste – to create a menu for the bar.

Martin Riese, a former restaurant manager from Germany, who is regarded as a pioneer in designer water, told the Sunday Times: “Water has a taste. Why not create a water menu?

“Just buy different brands of water with different [mineral levels] and taste them side to side. You will suddenly see how different they are.

“They can be salty, sweet, smooth, fruity, complex, metallic.”

He added: “Like wine, one can actually taste the region and depth from which the water comes.”

Selfridges has declined to comment on its plans.
