Louis van Gaal has claimed that expectations at Manchester United are too high and that he remains one of the world’s great managers.

At the club’s player of the year awards, the Dutchman reiterated his view that United are in transition, despite having splashed out more than £320million on players since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Van Gaal alone has spent £250m.

He said: ‘We have to meet the expectations of the biggest club in the world. Expectations are too high. We are in a period of transition. It is not so easy. When the media is writing for six months that I am sacked already, I can cope with that, it is not new for me. But for my players, it is not so easy. They are reading it every day.

‘What do you think happens to my authority? What do you think about whether they want to follow my advice, when their coach is shown to be a nobody because he cannot do anything?

‘But I am not like that. I am very arrogant. I am one of the best managers of the world.’

David de Gea won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for a third straight season, and defender Chris Smalling won the players’ player accolade.

Meanwhile, James Wilson, on loan at Brighton, has revealed that United’s stars have urged him to score against Middlesbrough this weekend and take the Seagulls into the Barclays Premier League.

The 20-year-old striker scored against Derby on Monday and he added: ‘I’ve done my best in training and hopefully it’s enough to get a start or, if not, to come on and make a difference again.’ – Daily Mail
