Yaoundé, Cameroon – The Cameroon Soccer Federation have announced Belgium-born Hugo Broos as the new coach of their national team.

In somewhat of a surprise – Broos was not on the shortlist of five managers that were earmarked to coach the Indomitable Lions – the 63-year-old will take over from Alexandre Belinga who was the interim coach after German Volker Finke’s was sacked in October 2015.

Broos has vast experience as a manager and has won the Belgian Championship twice with Brugge in 1992 and 1996. He has also enjoyed spells in Greece, Turkey and Algeria in recent years.

He won the first division title while in charge of Anderlecht in 2004 while his most recent job was a 5-month stay at Algerian outfit NA Hussein Dey.

His first task in the new position will be to keep Cameroon on top of their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group M, when they face qualifiers – home and away – South Africa next month.

He will also take charge of the team when they take on France in a friendly in May.

Broos’ other assistant will be compatriot Sven Vandenbroeck.
