Cricket writer Zaahier Adams gives his view on Friday’s first-ever day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide:

I can vividly remember the first time I went to day-night cricket. It was at the old Green Point Stadium, where Western Province were facing Transvaal’s Mean Machine.

The excitement of watching cricket at night in all its splendour and the usage of the white ball overwhelmed me. I believe spectators at the inaugural day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide on Friday will have a similar sense of enthusiasm.

Although the players will be wearing white flannels and not their colourful PJs, and the jury is still out on the use of a pink ball, I believe Test cricket at night is something that needs to be embraced.

I’m all for tradition and watching Dale Steyn swing the red ball around corners. However, if Test cricket at night is going to get more people through the gates, then sign me up.

Our modern-day schedules are so jam-packed that fitting in six hours of Test cricket during the week is often unrealistic.

Three hours after work, though, already sounds more appealing.

For Test cricket to stay relevant, it needs to continuously evolve. Day-night cricket could just be the start. – Cape Times
