Johannesburg - As the move to hold a World Twenty20 in 2018 gains momentum, South Africa still appears to be the frontrunner to host the event despite the SA government's ban on Cricket SA (CSA) bidding for sporting events for failing to meet transformation guidelines.

According to reports, the majority of ICC members are in favour of holding the tournament every two years with South Africa the preferred host. One of the main factors counting in South Africa's favour is the timezone which suits broadcasters.

The West Indies are also believed to be in the running for the hosting of the event, but it would not conducive to a big viewership in India due to the time difference.

South Africa has also not hosted an ICC event since the 2009 Champions Trophy.

“Of course we would be delighted to host any major ICC event,” Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat told ESPNcricinfo. “We have proven in the past what a perfect destination South Africa is.”

CSA met with government over the weekend to discuss all the issues surrounding the move to institute a ban, and though no action has been taken yet it is believed the cricketing body will be working hard to rectify the situation.
