Cape Town – Pakistan lost four wickets before lunch on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa at Newlands, in Cape Town, on Thursday.

Once again, the South African seam attack were spot on, with Dale Steyn finding some movement with the first delivery of the day.

Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel ensured the pressure was relentless from both ends as Pakistan struggled to withstand the pressure.

Faf du Plessis, standing in the gully, dropped opener Nasir Jamshed, when he was on three, off an outside edge to Philander but, fortunately for the South Africans, Jamshed was caught behind by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers off the very next ball.

Steyn then struck with the first delivery of his second spell, forcing Mohammad Hafeez to play a shot. Trying to defend his stumps, Hafeez, on 17, got a thick outside edge which went low to Graeme Smith at first slip.

It was then Morkel’s turn to get a share of the action, striking twice in one over. Azhar Ali (four) got an outside edge straight into De Villiers’ gloves, and four balls’ later captain Misbah-ul-Huq was back in the dressing room for a duck. Misbah was unable to get his bat out of the way in time and gloved one to Dean Elgar at short leg.

At lunch, Pakistan were 60 for four, with Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq unbeaten on 24 and 11 respectively. – Sapa
