Newtown, Connecticut - As the first young victims of last Friday's slaughter at Newtown, Connecticut, were laid to rest, there were signs in Washington that President Barack Obama's determination that “these tragedies must end” will translate into a concrete agenda for forcing Congress to pass new gun control legislation.

Senators allied to the powerful National Rifle Association, which has so far been silent on the massacre, have begun to speak up for legislation, acknowledging that the status quo is not acceptable. - The Independent
