Cape Town – The City of Cape Town said a fire was threatening property in Zonnebloem, near the city centre on Thursday.

Spokesperson for the City’s Traffic Services, Richard Coleman, said helicopters had not yet been dispatched, but three pumps were on the scene. He said vegetation had caught alight and was now threatening houses in the vicinity.

Huge plumes of smoke billowed over property within the fire’s vicinity, hours before President Jacob Zuma is scheduled to give his State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

Coleman said there were no road closures at this stage as firefighters attempted to put out the blaze.
