Limpopo - Twenty-three schools as well as other public buildings were torched and vandalised across the Vhembe district during protests this week.

Police said on Friday that 15 people have been arrested in connection with the damage.

The violent protests - sparked by the Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to incorporate their villages into the new Malamulele Municipality - have left thousands of schoolchildren stranded.

President Jacob Zuma has sent Deputy Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu, Minister of Cooperative Governance David van Rooyen and State Security Minister David Mahlobo to the troubled Vuwani area on Thursday to assess the damages and bring stability to the district.
