Tzaneen - A Limpopo police officer was shot dead when he responded to a burglary in progress at Dan village near Tzaneen on Saturday morning, police said.

Warrant Officer Jan Homu, 52, of the Ritavi uniform branch was shot while investigating and searching for the burglary suspects, spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said.

“He was shot once on the right hip. He died at the scene while a paramedic was working on him. His colleague was unharmed,” she said.

The suspects managed to flee with two plasma TVs and clothing. A task team had been established to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Nneke Ledwaba expressed his deepest sympathy to the family of the slain officer and vowed that police would use all resources available to ensure that the suspects were arrested as soon as possible.

He urged members of the community who might have any information to come forward to assist the police with their investigation.
