Durban - Twenty children aged between six and nine were injured, and an adult seriously injured, when the bakkie they were travelling in overturned on the P718 in Inanda, Durban, on Friday afternoon.

Crisis Medical spokesman Kyle van Reenen said paramedics, along with other emergency services, arrived on the scene shortly after 4.30pm to find “absolute mayhem as injured children lay spread out all over the road”.

“Reports from the scene suggest that the children were ejected from the bakkie they were travelling in after the driver lost control on a steep roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn, rolling several times, before finally coming to a rest in a small ravine next to the roadway,” he said.

The driver was seriously injured and was in a critical condition.

Advanced life support care was needed to stabilise him before he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The injured children were triaged and treated on the scene for minor to moderate injuries before being taken by ambulances to various nearby medical facilities for further treatment.
