Durban - A parched Ixopo community will get much-needed relief when three truckloads of water roll to their aid in the first Our Water/Project Thirst campaign delivery on Tuesday .

Shoprite and Checkers, in partnership with Independent Media, called on the public to donate water at supermarkets around the province.

The campaign, launched late last week, has already garnered almost 25 000 litres – including water donated by Shoprite to match public donations – to help the thirsty.

Shoprite divisional manager, Willem Hunlun, said it was heartening that so much water had been donated in such a short time.

“The people of KwaZulu-Natal are really supporting the drive and I hope more will donate to this very important initiative.”

Relief organisation Gift of the Givers, which has been at the forefront of the water aid drive around the country, will add two truckloads to the tally.

Readers are urged to visit any Shoprite or Checkers and buy and donate a 5-litre bottle of water for distribution to people in areas devastated by the drought.
