Pretoria -

Government expressed its sadness and condolences on Wednesday to the families and friends of those killed in flooding in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga this week.

Provincial governments and municipalities are working around the clock to ensure that the victims are provided with humanitarian relief, GCIS said in a statement.

“Disaster management committees of the affected provinces continue to urge community members to be cautious, and not dwell near river banks and low-lying areas.”

Acting government communications and information systems (GCIS) CEO Phumla Williams thanked emergency services and disaster relief organisations for their quick response.

At least 24 people have been killed due to heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga since Sunday. Three deaths have also been recorded around Mahikeng in the North West since Tuesday, due to torrential rain. - Sapa
