Durban - Animal lovers are up in arms over the deaths of a dog and her puppies that were allegedly dumped on a busy Durban freeway this week.

According to a Facebook post, penned by Vicki Penrose, the driver of a white Mercedes-Benz C200 dumped the animals on the N2 south, near the M7 intersection - Solomon Mahlangu (Edwin Swales VC) Drive.

“The mother and all but one puppy were run over and how we didn’t all end up in a nasty accident is a miracle,” said Penrose, who appeared to have witnessed the incident first hand.

“There is absolutely no reason for this type of cruelty when you could have dropped them off at any (one) of the many organisations available to take them,” she went on.

Her post was shared more than 3 000 times, with Facebook users commenting, calling the act “disgraceful” and saying the person behind it was “cruel”, “not a human being” and “should be jailed”.

In a follow-up post, Penrose later said the surviving pup, a black retriever type, had been adopted.

He had since been named Onyx.

Penrose posted a picture of the puppy with “his new mommy”.

“He’s had a bath, flea dip, a good meal and is happily napping on mommy’s lap as we speak,” she said.

Penrose managed to take down the number plate on the vehicle and reported the matter to the SPCA who in turn reported it to police.

She said the driver had been located, but police did not confirm this on Tuesday.

There also appeared to be some misunderstanding with regards to which SPCA had handled the incident.
