Johannesburg - A nomadic young male hippo who took up residence at the Serengeti Golf Estate near Kempton Park on the East Rand last week has moved on to greener pastures, according to a report on Monday.

Herby, as the developer of the estate, Leon van der Vyver, dubbed him, was last seen early on Saturday morning after he had taken up residence in the dam near the fourth hole, Beeld reported.

Hannes Hendriks, the estate manager, said the hippo had first arrived on Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon, he and his colleagues had erected an electric fence around the dam, with an escape passage leading to a truck.

“We were careful to leave Herby enough room to graze and munch on the lucerne bales we left for him,” Hendriks said.

He and a game ranger camped next to the dam to keep an eye on the animal, who took to the road at around 5am on Saturday morning, moving north, in the direction of the Rietvlei nature reserve near Pretoria. - Sapa
