Johannesburg - An East Rand Grade 11 pupil apparently shot dead a fellow pupil he accused of bullying him on Tuesday, a Gauteng education official said.

Spokesman Charles Phahlane said a Grade 11 pupil at Phineas Xulu Secondary School in Vosloorus, East Rand, brought his mother's firearm to school and shot dead a pupil he accused of bullying him.

He said the pupil's mother was a metro police officer and the boy had used her official firearm to kill his fellow pupil.

“The grade 11 learner is alleged to have been bullied repeatedly by a Grade 10 learner and two other boys, who yesterday afternoon (Monday) allegedly took his cap and cellphone,” said Phahlane.

The boy apparently shot dead the Grade 10 pupil when he and his friends confronted him in class on Tuesday.

The department arranged for psycho-social counsellors as well as representatives from faith-based groups to come to the school.

Phahlane said Education MEC Barbara Creecy and Safety Mec Faith Mazibuko would meet to discuss ways to curb school children's access to firearms. - Sapa
