Port Elizabeth -

Two men are missing after their boat capsized on a river in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Spokesman Craig Lambinon said the small paddle boat capsized on the Mtentu River, between Bizana and Port Edward, around 5am.

“It appears that three local men were crossing the Mtentu River, near to the river mouth, with the river still experiencing some flood conditions,” he said.

One of the men made it safely to the shore. A search party was launched for the others.

Lambinon said the area, about 25km from Port Edward, was difficult to access. The NSRI had towed a rigid inflatable boat over “barely accessible remote tracks” to reach the scene.

A foot patrol and a police dive unit were taking part in the search. - Sapa
