Johannesburg - “The living conditions of black people are far worse than they were under apartheid - and ANC president Jacob Zuma should take responsibility for it. He is a parent of corruption in South Africa but his supporters continue to protect him.”

This was the venomous attack lodged by DA leader Mmusi Maimane against Zuma when he addressed hundreds of his supporters during his party manifesto launch for the Midvaal region at the Sicelo Stadium on Saturday.

Maimane accused Zuma of being responsible for the unemployment rate of more that 8.9 million people, the majority of whom were young people, he said.

He was addressing DA supporters along with the mayor of the DA-controlled Midvaal Local Municipality, Bongani Baloyi, who is the party’s mayoral candidate ahead of the August 3 local government elections. Baloyi said he was still keen to serve as the mayor for the municipality, which has been under the control of the DA since 2006.

Maimane said: “We are genoeg (have had enough). It's about time that Zuma must go. The ANC has forgotten black people and instead focuses on the interest of only one person, Zuma. It can’t be right that the education of a black person is far worse than it was under apartheid. It can’t be right the education of black people is worse under Zuma,” he said.

Maimane said the outcome of the Constitutional Court judgment on March 31 and the latest spy tapes ruling in favour of his party was a “clear indication that Zuma cannot be trusted with the future of the country”.

“He is accused No 1 on 783 charges against him.”

He said Midvaal was proof of what his party was capable of.

“This little municipality is proving to be a major thorn in the side of the ruling party. It is the David among the Gauteng Goliaths.”

He said the unemployment rate there was under 12 percent and far less than elsewhere in Gauteng.

The DA was also targeting 50 percent electoral support in Joburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.
