Parliament - A showdown is expected in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon on the appointment of the successor to Thuli Madonsela as the Public Protector.

Opposition parties have already called for a credible candidate to succeed Madonsela.

ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu will table a motion in the National Assembly calling for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to drive the process to appoint the new public protector.

Parliament has set the deadline for the end of August for MPs to finalise the process.

Madonsela’s seven-year non-renewable term comes to an end in October, making the parliamentary process to pick her successor urgent.

Madonsela has had a rough time with the ANC in Parliament over her powers, until the Constitutional Court confirmed in the Nkandla judgment that her findings were binding.

The DA wants an independent and impartial public protector to succeed Madonsela.

It said on Tuesday that Madonsela has set very high standards with her independence and authority to conduct investigations without fear or favour.

MPs have the coming weeks to get a suitable replacement to Madonsela.

In her appeal to the portfolio committee on justice in April, Madonsela asked that she be given an opportunity to address the full sitting of the National Assembly before she leaves office.
