Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma says that while people are free to choose who they want as leaders in the ANC, the party’s national general council currently sitting in Midrand is about the state of organisation.

“I don’t know why people are scared… people can all make free choices, but this is not the issue here,” he told reporters.

ANC factions traditionally use gatherings like this to lobby for their leadership candidates. However, the midterm meeting is meant to assess where the party is organisationally and how the implementation of policy is progressing.

An upbeat President Jacob Zuma was speaking while paying a visit to the media centre at NGC meeting on Saturday afternoon.

Flanked by bodyguards, he said he was finding the meeting “good”.

“Discipline is there and I’m happy with the participation. Now is the time to discuss and find solutions. We are very happy,” he said.

The meeting continues on Sunday.
