Johannesburg - This year's ANC national general council is better organised, organisationally and politically. This, because the organisation’s league congresses have already been held, and reflected a different level of engagement than in previous years.

This is President Jacob Zuma’s view, speaking at the media a press briefing.

Zuma said the NGC’s held in 2005 in Pretoria and in 2010 in Durban could not be compared to the conference the ANC is currently holding in Midrand, Johannesburg.

“The issues are different. As you would know, the NGC held in 2005 was before (the ANC’s national conference in) Polokwane. The 2010 conference in Durban dealt with discipline. You would remember the issues around the ANC Youth League, then,” he told Independent.

He said his background as a trade unionist in the 1950s – whereafter the Unemployed Workers Union was established – showed the urgency of employment had been a consistently pressing issue in the country.

At the 2005 ANC NGC, the most pressing debate was on labour flexibility.
