Rustenburg - Rebecca Kotane, the widow of the late struggle stalwart Moses Kotane, celebrated her 104th birthday on Friday.

“Mme Rebecca Kotane is our mother and we love her. We thank God for blessing us with her life. She is 104 years old today,” said Fetsang Mokati-Thebe, from the Moses Kotane local municipality, wishing her a happy birthday.

The Moses Kotane municipality in North West was named after her husband.

Moses Kotane was the former treasurer-general of the ANC and secretary general of the South African Communist Party.

He suffered a stroke in 1968. Kotane sought treatment in the Soviet Union where he died on May 19, 1978.

Kotane's remains were returned to South Africa on March 1 last year, and he was reburied on March 14 at Pella.
