Pietermaritzburg – It was a mixed bag in terms of performance for the KwaZulu-Natal provincial executive, with four of the 10 members performing above average, according to the opposition Democratic Alliance.

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal released its annual scorecard where it assessed KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu and his executive council and their performance during the course of the year.

According to Sizwe Mchunu, the leader of the DA in the legislature, none of the members of the executive council (MEC) earned a distinction, but three earned a credible B while the premier himself came in with a noteworthy C.

Scored out of 10, finance MEC Belinda Scott, agriculture MEC Cyril Xaba and public works MEC Ravi Pillay each scored seven out of 10, with the premier scoring six.

The primary reason that MEC’s failed to score well was their apparent desire to place party work above that of their portfolio.

“We have instances of MECs that hardly attend committee meetings, but can spotted carrying out party work. During a sitting you will be lucky to see the entire provincial cabinet,” said Sizwe Mchunu.

“We observed that on the weeks approaching the ANC conference we would learn at the eleventh hour that a meeting had been cancelled and immediately after the conference another crucial meeting was cancelled so we fear that work of government will be compromised,” he said.

The members were measured on attending meetings, answering parliamentary questions, implementing their promises, as well as getting clean departmental audits.

According to the DA legislative leader, the worst offender was Willies Mchunu, the MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison. He scored a miserly one out of 10, closely followed by health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo.

“When a child fails to perform, the normal route is to inform the parents and we hope that the ANC will look at the performance of these worst performing MECs,” said Sizwe Mchunu.

He denied the report card was a cheap publicity stunt. The DA is the official opposition in the legislature.
