KwaZulu-Natal - Greed and corruption in the ANC are devouring the party, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said, according to a report on Wednesday.

The African National Congress had to ensure it rooted out greed and corruption so that its members were people of value, Mantashe said in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, according to a report in The Times.

“(Greed) is eating (the ANC) to death,” he reportedly said. “(Some ANC members) have become like mice in a cheese factory.”

He said the newly elected ANC national executive committee would implement the recommendations of an inquiry, set up by the party, into irregularities in the nomination of councillors before the 2011 local government elections.

Mantashe said if any ANC members were found to have abused the nomination process, the party would hand them over to the police.

If the inquiry recommended a re-run of the nomination process for certain municipalities, the ANC would comply, he said. - Sapa
