Durban - A bakkie towing a trailer caught alight on Thursday morning on the N2 freeway near Queen Nandi Drive, causing a major disruption to the flow of peak-hour traffic.

Durban Fire Department North Divisional Commander, Bruce de Gier, said the bakkie was carrying cardboard when it caught alight at 7.34am.

He said the cause of the fire was unknown.

No injuries were reported.

The fire spread from the vehicle on to the grass verges alongside the freeway, covering the lanes with smoke.

By 9.30am, officials had cleared three lanes, allowing traffic to start clearing.
