Johannesburg - A man accused of beating a Muslim to death is expected back in the Krugersdorp Regional Court on Thursday.

Roedolf Viviers, 28, was denied bail at his last court appearance on August 22. He faces charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A second man, Zayne van Tonder, 33, accused of assault, was granted R2 000 bail.

The two allegedly insulted Muhammad Fayaaz Kazi, 27, and his friend Anser Mahmood, at a fast-food outlet in Magaliesberg on August 6 over their beards. An argument and a fight ensued. Kazi was severely beaten and died in hospital.

Prosecutor Micky Thesner said the State opposed bail as Viviers was accused of a schedule five offence which, according to the Criminal Procedure Act, requires him to prove exceptional circumstances exist to get bail. - Sapa
