Welkom – Six people are in police custody after being nabbed in three separate raids in Welkom over the past few days, Free State police said.

In one incident, on October 2, police received a tip-off about suspicious activity in Riebeeckstad, Welkom.

“A 38-year-old Nigerian national was caught red-handed while busy inside a crack lab found inside a rented room,” said police spokesman Stephen Thakeng.

“The following were found: 1.2 kilograms of raw ingredients used to manufacture cocaine rocks which are worth R500 000, 16 “full moons”, CAT and apparatus used to manufacture drugs were seized.”

The following day, officers received a tip-off about three Lesotho nationals who were illegally in possession of gold amalgam near the Saaiplaas mine.

“On arrival of these police members, gold amalgam that weighed 500 grams with the street value of R150 000 was found in their possession and the three suspects were arrested,” said Thakeng.

Police also arrested two people for possession of illegal firearms at the weekend, after they boarded a taxi headed to Kroonstad.

The six are expected to apply for bail in the local court on Monday.
