Cape Town – A correctional services official was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly participating in a vigilante killing in Worcester, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Police spokeswoman Nasiphi Same said the 39-year-old prison official was arrested in Zwelitsha, Worcester, during a “public violent action” in which a suspected criminal died.

“The victim was assaulted with stones and other dangerous objects, he was later rushed to the hospital for medical treatment where he later died,” said Same.

“The suspect was arrested on the scene and he was wearing a correctional services uniform and it has been confirmed that he works for the Department of Correctional Services at Brandvlei Correctional Centre.”

The official was expected to appear in the Worcester Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of public violence and murder.
