Johannesburg - The Pakistani couple accused of kidnapping a baby and trying to kill his nanny will be back in court on Friday for a bail application.

Khalid Ayub and Khadija Khan will remain in custody until their next appearance on February 1, when they will apply for bail.

The couple allegedly kidnapped six-month-old Revelation Jones on January 8 from his parents' house in Bezuidenhout Valley, and tried to slit his nanny's throat. They had rented a room in the family's house.

The boy's father received an SMS to pay R100 000 in exchange for the baby's safe return.

The couple was arrested in Fordsburg on January 10, after a tip-off. The baby was found unharmed.

Khan, 36, had three children from a previous marriage - two boys aged 2 and 6, and a seven-year-old girl.

She was around seven months pregnant with her fourth child, believed to be Ayub's. - Sapa
