Winburg - A top ranking municipal official in Bloemfontein was in police custody on Monday after being arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and then driving to a dump site in Winburg and burning her body, Free State police said.

“It is alleged that the 33-year-old man killed his wife on Friday, November 27, after a domestic violence related incident in their home in Langenhoven Park in Bloemfontein. He then drove with the corpse to his parents’ home in Winburg were he spent the weekend with the body at the Winburg house,” police spokesman Ian Gaobepe said.

“He then took the body of his 26 year old wife to a local dumping site where he set the body alight, in the early hours of Sunday, November 29. He was spotted by the people who reside on the dumping site and they then alerted the police once they noticed that it was a human body being burnt.”

Police rushed to the dump site where they confirmed that the burnt remains were in fact from a human body.

The man and his vehicle were identified through CCTV footage of him buying petrol in a bottle at a nearby petrol station.

Gaobepe said the man was arrested within hours of being identified while he was “hiding at a house in the location of Makeleketla”.

He will appear in the Winburg Magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
