Johannesburg - No one could sympathise with musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala, magistrate Brian Nemavhidi said on Wednesday.

“Your conduct shows you have no regard to the rules of the road.... No one can sympathise with you because you brought it on yourself,” he said.

Nemavhidi was handing down judgment in the Protea Magistrate's Court.

“You jointly or individually participated in the taking of drugs... and drove your vehicles recklessly,” he said, adding that their actions had affected society and cost a lot of money.

They were found guilty on October 16 of four counts of murder and two of attempted murder, of using drugs, of racing on a public road, and of driving under the influence of drugs.

They were drag-racing in Protea North on March 8, 2010, when they crashed into a group of schoolboys, killing Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola, and leaving Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana permanently brain damaged.

Family members of the schoolchildren sat emotional in the public gallery.

One of their mothers cried and rocked back-and-forth.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala stood in the dock with their heads down, listening. - Sapa
