Durban – A 20-year-old woman who tried to sell her baby on the Gumtree website for R5 000 was sentenced to three years house arrest in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Wednesday.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson Kara said that the woman was sentenced to five years imprisonment which was suspended.

The woman, who had previously pleaded guilty to contravening the Human Trafficking Act, would also have to undergo correctional supervision.

The woman previously told the court that she had decided to sell her baby when her boyfriend stopped paying child support after finding out that the child was not his.

She was arrested by police who were alerted to the advert she had placed on the website. She was arrested following a sting operation where she handed over the baby after receiving the R5 000 from an undercover police officer in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.

Ramkisson said: “The National Prosecuting Authority accepts the sentence given by the court considering the circumstances of this particular case.”
