Deneysville, Free State - Emergency medical service personnel were trying to get to injured prisoners at Groenpunt prison in Deneysville, Free State, shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Correctional Services said.

A riot broke out at the facility at around 4pm on Monday when prisoners refused to eat and started setting fires.

Police spokesman Constable Peter Kareli said it was not yet clear how many inmates had been injured.

Four warders who had been attacked were all out of hospital.

“The situation has been taken care of,” he said.

Grievances were to do with the quality of prison food and certain prison officials, according to Correctional Services. - Sapa
