KwaZulu-Natal - A man who raped his 82-year-old neighbour in New Hanover in KwaZulu-Natal was sentenced to life in prison in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday, SABC news reported.

Avelo Tuswa, 25, pleaded guilty to the rape in October.

The 82-year-old woman collapsed in court on Friday after hearing Judge Igna Stretch read out the sentence.

She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In his testimony, Tuswa said he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime.

He said he was walking past the pensioner's home when he noticed that the door was left open. He threatened the pensioner before raping her.

A doctor's report confirmed the pensioner had suffered serious injuries. - Sapa
