King William’s Town - A 30-year-old man appeared briefly in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murdering his girlfriend, Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Monday.

The case against Mthandazo Bambaniso was postponed to February 15 for a formal bail application.

Police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said Bambaniso handed himself over to police and was arrested on Thursday last week.

He said the suspect lived with his 23-year-old girlfriend, Zanele Mayila, at the Mzantsi informal settlement in Sokapase Village, Ngqamakwe.

“The deceased who was the girlfriend of the suspect was murdered on Wednesday 03 February 2016 at about 20:20. She sustained multiple wounds on her upper body”, he said.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla, condemned the attack of the deceased “who could not defend herself”.
