Johannesburg – A 28-year-old man was arrested and will appear in the Wesselsbron Magistrate’s Court after the body of his girlfriend was found under his bed in a shallow grave, in the Free State, police said.

South African Police Services spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said the arrest was made after Masepetlele Williams reported her sister, Maditaba Setsetse, 29, missing Tuesday afternoon.

“Relatives of the deceased reported her missing and a thorough investigation by Wesselsbron SAPS members led to the gruesome discovery of the girlfriend of the suspect under his bed.”

Thakeng said Setsetse’s family suspected that the man would know her whereabouts.

“After a missing file was registered for further investigation, the boyfriend was fetched from his residence by Constables Khothatso Taole and Molefi Mathobisa who brought him to the Police Station for questioning. Constable Taole and Constable Thakanyane Chaka drove back to the residence of the boyfriend and asked permission to search the shack house at Ithoballe Informal Settlement in Monyakeng.”

He said the officers smelt a bad smell while they were busy searching the shack and they decided to remove the bed.

“The carpet was also removed and they noticed a shallow grave and the Acting Station Commander, Captain Rian Tait and Detective Commander Captain Dichechane were called in for further investigation,” Thakeng said.

The shallow grave was dug and the body of a human being was found, which was identified by her relatives as the body of Setsetse who had been reported missing.

The suspect who was the boyfriend of the deceased was arrested for murder and will appear in court on Friday.
