Kimberley - A man was shot dead after trying to cut a policeman's throat in Kimberley on Wednesday, Northern Cape police said.

Police in a patrol vehicle stopped two men and searched them, Lieutenant Donald Mdhluli said.

One man was found to be in possession of a knife, which the police confiscated. They were taken in for questioning.

“While driving to the police station, one suspect that was sitting behind the driver drew a knife and (tried to) cut the police driver's throat,” said Mdhluli.

He said the officer stopped the double-cab bakkie and shot the man, who died on the scene. The other man was taken in for questioning.

“We don't know how he still had the knife, because they were searched,” said Mdhluli.

The policeman was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition. His colleague was treated for shock. - Sapa
