A smiling self-confessed child killer, Zulfa Jacobs, on Monday ignored threats on her life and asked a court to release her on bail.

The former crèche teacher is accused of suffocating her two-year-old son, Taariq Jacobs, to death.

The bombshell comes months after she ditched her first bail application - in fear of her life after an angry mob bayed for her blood outside Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates Court.

Last week the jailed Mitchell’s Plain mother made dramatic claims in a handwritten prison letter handed to the Daily Voice.

In the six-page letter, Jacobs claims she was driven to kill her son because she feared losing him.

And she gave grim descriptions of the December 29, 2011, murder.

On Monday Jacobs, 31, appeared cheerful in the dock at the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court and smiled at her family in the public gallery.

She breathed a sigh of relief when State prosecutor Gift Hina and her lawyer Nabisa Khan informed the court she wished to bring a bail application.

Hina said they needed to speed up the bail process because the Department of Public Prosecutions is already formalising the list of charges ahead of her trial set down for the Cape High Court.

Magistrate Walter Golding then agreed to postpone the case to September 3 when Jacobs will be informed of the date of the bail hearing.

Outside court, Zulfa’s father Shahied Jappie told the Daily Voice he would be happy if his daughter could come home.

He added he was not in a position to comment on the letter she had written.

“I’d love to have her home,” he said.

“People do not know how I feel.”

When Jacobs was arrested, police told the media she had confessed to killing her son by burying his face in the sand.

Police also indicated they would be investigating the deaths of her two other children, two-year-old Naeelah who died nine years ago of a suspected cot death, and Sabri, also two, who died of a suspected asthma attack.

In the letter written inside Pollsmoor Prison dated August 13, Jacobs begs everyone to forgive her for killing Taariq.- Daily Voice
