Johanneburg -

The sentencing of musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala on Wednesday should serve as a lesson to other motorists, the Justice Project SA said.

“South Africa has an endemic problem with understanding that intoxicating substances and motor vehicles are a deadly mix... the time has come that people view doing so with disgust and condemnation,” JPSA chairman Howard Dembovsky said.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each by the Protea Magistrate's Court.

The two were drag-racing in Protea North on March 8, 2010, when they crashed into a group of schoolboys. Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola were killed. Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana were left permanently brain damaged.

They were sentenced to a further four years for attempted murder. For use of drugs, driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road, the pair were sentenced to a year for each count, to run concurrently.

“We advise motorists that the only safe policy when driving is to refrain completely from using intoxicating substances, including alcohol and drugs and to abide by all traffic laws,” Dembovsky said. - Sapa
