Johannesburg - The Hawks on Thursday said they had arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing a metro police officer in Kliptown, Soweto, a fortnight ago.

The suspect, who was arrested by the Hawks Task Team that specialises in tracking police killers, will appear before the Protea Regional Court on Friday.

Recounting the fatal shooting, the Hawks said: “Metro Police Officer Nicholas Diameen Robson had just left his house on his way to work when he was approached by a group of men who shot him 13 times before making way with his service pistol”.

The Hawks said as the suspects fled the scene they robbed, shot and killed a woman. They also shot and wounded another man.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Lesotho national, who is the country illegally, was arrested in Kanana township, Klerksdorp.

Investigations led the Hawks Task Team to Mandela Squatter Camp in Kliptown, where a firearm, with one police magazine and one live round of ammunition, was recovered.

The suspect will face two charges of murder and one of attempted murder.

The search for other four suspects is still under way.
