Durban - Five schoolboys charged with raping a fellow pupil at their school south of Durban are expected to apply for bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.

The names of the boys and the school are being withheld to protect the identity of the schoolgirl.

Fifteen boys were arrested last week after teachers became aware of a video, which reportedly depicts the boys taking part in group sex with a 15-year-old girl, and reported the matter to the police.

Ten of them were released into the custody of their parents because they were under-age. Of the remaining five, three are in Grade 11 and the remaining two are in matric.

It is believed that the incidents occurred more than once, on the school’s premises and outside school.

It has been reported that the girl has been moved to another school, but some members of the community were upset by the boys’ arrests and protested outside the school last Wednesday.

The Citizen newspaper reported last week that parents of the boys and others had claimed that the boys were innocent and should be released from custody.

Education Department spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said on Monday that the matter at the school had been resolved.

“The situation returned to normal last week Thursday and there have been no disruptions since then.”
