The Lengau hotel in Bloemfontein was robbed of cash by a gang of gunmen in the early hours of Friday morning, Free State police said.

Captain Chaka Marope said five armed men wearing balaclavas, entered the hotel through a basement door and hid away.

“Three were armed with pistols and the others with knives. They then held three security guards and a cashier at gunpoint,” Marope said.

“It is alleged that during the process the security guards were ordered to be on their knees on the ground while other suspects emptied the cash register where they stole an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.”

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported, he said.

Investigations continued.
