- A 37-year-old man is due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Tuesday on charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

The man was arrested on Friday in a joint operation by the national intervention unit, the Umhlali K9 unit, and other SA Police Service units, spokesman Major Shooz Magudulela said.

An unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in his possession during his arrest.

On April 25, at about 8.30pm, Sphamandla Mkhulise, 43, and his girlfriend were at the Ezimangweni taxi rank in Inanda when they were approached by the man.

The man allegedly fired shots at them, fatally wounding Mkhulise.

Mkhulise’s girlfriend was wounded during the shooting and admitted to hospital for treatment, Magudulela said.

“A case of murder and attempted murder was opened at the Inanda police station for further investigation. The suspect fled the scene on foot after the incident. Inanda detectives immediately started their investigation and roped in other units to trace the suspect.

“After an intensive investigation the suspect was traced and arrested at his hideout in the Inanda area. The firearm seized from the suspect will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any crimes in the country,” Magudulela said.
