Durban – A man posing as a patient shot dead a security guard at a Durban clinic before shooting dead a policeman tasked with finding the security guard’s killer, police and health officials said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that Zimele Nzama, 38, was gunned down outside a clinic in U-section of Durban’s Umlazi township shortly before 7pm on Monday night.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health spokesman Desmond Motha said in a statement released on Tuesday that Nzama was a temporary security guard who had been brought in to replace striking security guards.
“It is alleged that last night, around 19h30, an unknown assailant posing as a patient, approached the clinic and shot dead the guard who was manning the entrance gate,” said Motha.
Zwane said that 54-year old Warant Officer Jabulani Didi and a colleague arrived at the scene and were given a description of the Nzama’s killer and told in which direction he had headed.
“The members followed up information given to them of a description of the suspect and the direction in which he fled. While near Isipingo Primary school, the members spotted the suspect who allegedly opened fire at the members,” said Zwane.
Didi was killed instantly.
The Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa said that The Hawks had been brought in and were investigating the case.
