Johannesburg - The charred remains of a woman were found in an abandoned house in Thabeng village, said North West police on Wednesday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the body, thought to be that of a 25- to 30-year-old, was discovered by community members on Tuesday.

He said the neighbours saw a fire on Sunday night near the house, but thought it was children playing with fire.

“On Tuesday morning, the neighbours detected a smell coming from the house and they went to investigate. Police were alerted and summoned to the scene and found the body covered with corrugated iron,” said Ngubane.

The corpse had been burnt beyond recognition.

“It was her breasts and the toes that helped in identifying her as a woman,” said Ngubane.

Police were attempting to trace her identity.
