Durban - A cash-in-transit guard escaped with his life after he was attacked by a gang of robbers at a busy Pietermaritzburg shopping complex on Monday.

The G4S security guard was carrying a cash box containing R300 000 in cash from the Capitec Bank at Symons Centre to an awaiting armoured vehicle, where his colleague was behind the wheel, when he was attacked by four armed men in view of a large crowd at 10am.

The guard had a gun put to his head and was told to lie on the floor and hand over the cash box. His weapon was taken.

The robbers fled through the shopping centre to a nearby taxi rank.

Spokeswoman for G4S, Wendy Hardy, said the company was thankful that no one was injured. No arrests have yet been made.
