Cape Town - The provincial Department of Justice and Constitutional Development clinched two gold medals and one silver for excellent service - as well as its 18th clean audit in a row from the auditor-general - at the National Public Service Excellence Awards.

At the ceremony in Johannesburg on Friday, the province walked away with Best Model Regional Office; gold for Best Model Cluster Courts: Bellville Cluster; gold for the Model Court Award: Worcester Magistrate’s Court; and silver for the Best Performing Court Interpreter, which went to Nyaniso Desha, from the Bellville cluster.

Regional Justice Department head Hishaam Mohamed said justice officials are dedicated and would continue to eradicate corruption wherever it occurs.

In a letter circulated to courts and staff, he wrote: “I am exceptionally proud of our staff, from senior management to each clerk and interpreter who contributed towards making this prestigious achievement possible… Our obligation is to ensure service delivery in a dignified manner which respects the human rights of all people.

“The privilege bestowed on us as court administrators is to provide basic court services to all and promote access to justice, but, more particularly, to the poor and vulnerable groups who continue to inspire us.”

Bellville area court manager Gavin Maggott said the cluster provided services to 520 000 people.

“We have dedicated officials who are doing a great job to serve our people with pride,” Maggott said.

Worcester area court manager Riaan Myburgh said two dedicated asset controllers were appointed to conduct quarterly assets verification, but more importantly all maintenance monies were paid to beneficiaries via electronic fund transfer.
