Durban - Police are searching for two men who allegedly stuffed a Verulam businessman inside a shipping container and covered him with pockets of cement.

Ganas Chinnian, 63, owned C&L Hardware, a business he operated from two shipping containers outside his home.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the body of the man, who had been strangled, was found at 8.30pm on Tuesday night. “It is alleged that two men known to him strangled and locked him inside the container. The motive is unknown at this stage,” Zwane said.

Prem Balram, spokesman for private security company Reaction Unit South Africa, said the family had been looking for Chinnian from just before 5pm. They thought he had left the premises with a client when they found the containers locked.

The family would not say how they found out Chinnian was in the container because it may hamper investigations.

Balram said they broke the lock and opened the container. After a search they found Chinnian`s body hidden under bags of cement. It is estimated that 15 to 20 pockets of cement had been placed on him.

Balram said paramedics declared him dead on the scene.

His son, Pragasen, said the family was too distraught to speak.

Zwane said a case of murder had been lodged at the Verulam police station.
